The Ritter® 224 Barrier-Free® Examination Chair by Midmark is a powered exam chair designed to improve patient accessibility, caregiver ergonomics, and everyday exam-room efficiency. With a power-adjustable base, 18-inch low seat height, 500 lb patient weight capacity, standard wired foot control, integrated stirrups, and multiple configuration options, the Ritter 224 provides practical powered positioning for primary care and outpatient examination environments. The series is available in three primary configurations—224-001, 224-002, and 224-003—allowing facilities to select additional features such as pelvic tilt, drawer heating, electrical receptacles, and the Clean Assist™ Roller System.
The Ritter 224 is designed around Midmark's Barrier-Free concept, using powered height adjustment to lower the patient support surface for easier entry and transfers.
The chair lowers to an 18-inch uncompressed seat height and can be raised to approximately 37 inches, allowing clinicians to bring the patient to a more ergonomic working height after the patient is seated.
This powered height range can be particularly valuable when caring for older adults, patients with limited mobility and patients who may have difficulty accessing traditional fixed-height examination tables.
Current accessibility note: The Ritter 224 remains a current Midmark-supported product in 2026, but Midmark now recommends the newer Ritter 228/229 when facilities specifically need to prepare for potential enforcement of a 17-inch-or-lower transfer-height requirement. Midmark states that both the 224/225 and newer models comply with current federal regulations, while the newer 228/229 models meet the 2024 U.S. Access Board standards.
Unlike a manual examination table, the Ritter 224 uses a powered base to raise and lower the patient.
A wired foot control is standard, allowing the provider to adjust chair height without requiring manual lifting or interrupting the examination to operate controls by hand.
Powered positioning allows the chair to be lowered for patient access and then raised to a comfortable examination height, helping clinicians reduce bending and reaching during routine examinations.
The Ritter 224 has a 500 lb patient weight capacity, allowing it to accommodate a broad range of patients in general outpatient and primary-care environments.
The combination of higher weight capacity and an 18-inch low seat height provides a more accessible alternative to conventional fixed-height examination tables for many patients.
The 224-002 and 224-003 configurations incorporate Midmark's Active Sensing Technology.
Active Sensing Technology is designed to enhance safety during powered chair movement by responding when the chair encounters an obstruction. This is particularly useful in busy exam rooms where stools, equipment, waste containers or other objects may inadvertently be positioned beneath or around the chair.
The base 224-001 configuration does not include Active Sensing Technology.
The Ritter 224 includes stirrups to support lower-body examinations. The 224-002 and 224-003 configurations also incorporate pelvic tilt, providing additional positioning flexibility for applicable examinations.
These features expand the chair's versatility beyond routine physical examinations, allowing appropriately configured Ritter 224 models to support women's health and other examinations requiring lower-body positioning.
Pelvic tilt is not available on the 224-001 model.
Storage and convenience features vary by Ritter 224 configuration.
The 224-002 and 224-003 models include a drawer heater, helping keep selected supplies conveniently stored and warmed near the point of care. These configurations also provide the additional features associated with Midmark's higher-specification 224 models.
The entry-level 224-001 is specifically configured without the supply drawer and debris tray, making it the more streamlined option within the 224 family.
The 224-002 and 224-003 configurations include tamper-resistant receptacles positioned on both sides of the examination chair.
These integrated receptacles provide convenient power connections for compatible ancillary equipment used in the exam room while helping reduce the need to route device cords to more distant wall outlets.
The Ritter 224-003 adds the Clean Assist Roller System, distinguishing it from the 224-001 and 224-002 configurations.
The retractable roller system allows staff to more easily move the examination chair for access to the floor and surrounding areas during cleaning. Once cleaning is complete, the chair can be returned to its normal stationary position.
This feature can be especially valuable in high-volume exam rooms where environmental cleaning around large clinical equipment is performed frequently.

Ritter 224-001
Provides the core Barrier-Free Examination Chair platform with powered height adjustment and standard wired foot control. This configuration excludes the supply drawer and debris tray and does not include pelvic tilt.
Ritter 224-002
Adds tamper-resistant receptacles, drawer heater, pelvic tilt and Active Sensing Technology to the powered examination-chair platform.
Ritter 224-003
Includes the features of the 224-002 and adds the Clean Assist Roller System for easier chair movement during environmental cleaning.
This model structure allows facilities to select a basic powered exam chair or add convenience, positioning and cleaning features based on individual exam-room requirements.
